World Cancer Day: 4 February




World Cancer Day is a global event taking place every year on 4 February.

Its aim is to raise awareness and education about cancer, sensitize governments and individuals across the world to take action.

World Cancer Day 2020 is being celebrated with a theme 'I am and I will'. This theme has been proposed for the next three years.

World Cancer Day was established by the Paris Charter at the World Summit against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris on 4 February 2000.

Facts:

Globally 9.6 million people die from cancer every year, this number is predicted to almost double by 2030.

At least one third of common cancers are preventable.

Cancer is the second-leading cause of death worldwide.

Tobacco use is linked to 71% of lung cancer deaths, and accounts for at least 22% of all cancer deaths

Lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver cancer are the most common types of cancer in men, while breast, colorectal, lung, cervix and thyroid cancer are the most common among women. 

The five most frequent cancers in India are breast cancer, cervical cancer, oral cancer, lung and colorectal cancer.
