International Migrants Day : 18 December

International Migrants Day : 18 December

International Migrants Day is celebrated on 18 December to raise awareness about the protection for migrants and refugees.

The International Migrants Day 2019's theme is "We Together."

The observance of International Migrants Day this year focuses on the stories of social cohesion, which are as varied and unique as each of the 272 million migrants living new lives and building new communities in every corner of the globe.

Migration is a global phenomenon driven by many forces. These start with aspirations for dignity, safety and peace. The decision to leave home is always extreme, and, too often, the beginning of a dangerous, sometimes fatal journey.

In 2019, the number of migrants globally reached an estimated 272 million, 51 million more than in 2010. International migrants comprise 3.5 percent of the global population. Compared to 2.8 percent in 2000 and 2.3 percent in 1980, the proportion of international migrants in the world population has also risen.

On 4 December 2000, the General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed 18 December International Migrants Day

On 18 December 1990, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
