International Human Solidarity Day: 20 December


International Human Solidarity Day is observed on 20 December. The day celebrates unity in diversity.

The Day aims to raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity. It encourages debate on the ways to promote solidarity for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) including poverty eradication.

The day reminds the governments to respect their commitments to international agreements. It also encourages new initiatives for poverty eradication.

On 22 December 2005, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values and designated 20 December of each year as International Human Solidarity Day.

International Human Solidarity Day is:

A day to celebrate our unity in diversity,

A day to remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements,

A day to encourage debate on the ways to promote solidarity for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals including poverty eradication,

A day of action to encourage new initiatives for poverty eradication.
