Greta Thunberg named 2019 Time Person of the Year

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2019.

Thunberg, who turns 17 in January and who is known for her blunt, straightforward addresses to world leaders, has urged immediate action to address what she describes as the global climate crisis.

The teen, whose climate activism went viral in 2018, delivered a scathing address to the UN General Assembly at the Climate Action Summit in New York City in September.

She had travelled for nearly 14 days across the Atlantic Ocean in a zero-emissions racing yacht to attend the conference.

Her initiative to strike galvanized students to protest against climate change throughout Europe and that momentum quickly fanned across the globe, becoming the “Fridays For Future" movement.

Others honoured by TIME: US Women’s Soccer Team: Athlete of the Year, the US Public Servants: Guardians of the Year, singer Lizzo: Entertainer of the Year’ and Disney CEO Bob Iger: Business Person of the Year
