11 December : International Mountain Day

International Mountain Day (IMD) is celebrated on 11 December to raise awareness about the importance of mountains, focuses on the opportunities and on the development of mountains.

This day also educate people in understanding the role of mountains in the environment and its impact on life.

The theme of International Mountain Day 2019 is "Mountains matter for Youth".

The first international day was celebrated for the first time the following year, 2003.

As of 2003, it has been observed every year to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world.

December 11, "International Mountain Day", was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003. The General Assembly "encouraged the international community to organize events at all levels on that day to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development."

Importance Of Mountains :

Mountains are home of the 15% of the world´s population and a quarter of the world’s land animals and plants. They provide freshwater for everyday life to half of humanity.
