UNCLOS ( United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea )


It is an international agreement that determines the rights and responsibilities of countries over the world's seas and oceans and establishes rules for the use of maritime resources.

The United Nations adopted this law in the year 1982 but came into effect in November 1994.


India adopted UNCLOS in the year 1995, under which sea resources are classified into three regions - Inland Water (IW), Territorial Sea (TS) and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
