Every year 8 September is celebrated as World Literacy Day with a view to show the importance of education in the world and to eliminate illiteracy.
On 17 November 1964, UNESCO declared International Literacy Day on 9 September.
It was first celebrated in 1966.
It aims to shed light on the importance of literacy individually, community and socially.
